Trying something new can feel intimidating, so we put together a quick guide to help you feel comfortable long before you step onto the dance floor. You’ll find answers to common questions about music, what to wear, etiquette, and more. No pressure, no prerequisites—just a friendly community ready to dance with you.

At our First Friday dances, Indigo is primarily a social partner dance space. Most people dance with many different partners throughout the night. Our core movement style is blues fusion, a grounded and creative approach that blends blues with influences from Latin, West Coast Swing, and other expressive improvisational styles.

Early in the evening, when more traditional blues music is played, you’ll often see classic blues movement—groove-based, grounded, and rhythmic. As the music shifts into blues fusion and then broader fusion, the dancing becomes more varied. On a typical First Friday, you might see:

  • Traditional blues
  • Blues fusion
  • West Coast blues fusion
  • Latin blues fusion
  • Micro blues
  • Fusion partner dancing

Some First Fridays also feature themed events, which influence the dancing you’ll see:

  • Live band nights tend to highlight traditional blues styles and blues-fusion crossover
  • Full fusion nights create space for more experimental, flow-forward movement
  • Special theme nights may explore a particular vibe or aesthetic

For lessons, workshops, and special events, the dance style is more intentionally focused—blues fusion technique one month, micro the next, traditional blues another time. These events help dancers build range while still keeping social dance accessible and chill.

At our First Friday social dances, the music typically features a blend of traditional blues, blues fusion, and broader fusion genres. Early in the night, DJs often start with more traditional blues to support grounded, classic movement. As the evening progresses, the music shifts toward blues fusion and then wider fusion—groove-forward, atmospheric, R&B, neo-soul, electronic, and other textures that encourage creativity and connection.

Some First Fridays have specific themes, which shape the playlist. Depending on the event, you might experience:

  • A live blues band playing classic and modern blues
  • A full fusion night with an eclectic, mood-driven set
  • A DJ highlight night focusing on a particular vibe or style

For lessons and special workshop events, the music is tailored to the style being taught—traditional blues, micro, Latin-influenced fusion, West Coast–inspired fusion, and more.

Welcome! Indigo is one of the best places to start.
We recommend:

  • Attending our beginner lesson (usually offered before most social dances).
  • Watching others, asking questions, and trying things at your own pace.
  • Speaking with our volunteers or instructors if you’d like a friendly intro—we love helping newcomers.

No prior dance experience, partner, or training required. Just bring yourself!

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely. Think breathable fabrics, layers you can adjust, and anything that makes you feel like you. Our community ranges from casual to slightly dressy, but there’s no dress code—just comfort.

It gets warm when dancing – bring an extra shirt! Many dancers bring a spare shirt or two so they can stay fresh and comfortable throughout the night.

We’re a close-connection community, and good hygiene helps everyone feel welcome.
A few tips:

  • Deodorant or body spray before dancing
  • Breath mints or gum
  • Fresh shirts if you tend to get warm
  • Avoid strong fragrances, as some dancers are sensitive

Thank you for helping keep the dance floor comfortable for all.

Wear shoes that are clean, comfortable, and secure on your feet. Many dancers prefer:

  • Flat shoes or dance sneakers
  • Smooth-soled shoes that make turning easier
  • Clean indoor shoes (to protect the floor and help everyone dance safely)

If you’re new, don’t overthink it—just choose something supportive that won’t stick to the floor.

Pricing varies depending on the type of event. Most regular First Friday dances and lessons are low-cost and community-supported. Special workshops, live bands, or visiting instructors may have different pricing.

Check our Calendar page or the Facebook event for the most up-to-date details.

Indigo follows a consent-first, pressure-free approach to social dancing.

When asking for a dance:

  • Make eye contact or politely ask, “Would you like to dance?”
  • Accept “no” with a smile—no explanations needed.
  • If someone looks like they’re resting, assume they are.

When declining a dance:

  • A simple “No thank you” is enough.
  • You never need to give a reason.
  • You are welcome to rest, sit out, or choose your dance partners at any time.

We prioritize everyone feeling safe, comfortable, and empowered to choose their dance experience.
